What moves the number

Why siding quotes can vary so much

Living square footage is not the same as exterior wall area. Stories, footprint, gables, bump-outs, windows, doors, trim, tear-off, and the siding material all change the amount of labor and material required.

  • Material: vinyl is usually one of the lower-cost choices, while fiber cement and wood typically cost more to install.
  • Height: multi-story work adds staging, safety, and labor time.
  • Exterior complexity: gables, dormers, bump-outs, and intersecting walls create more cuts and detail work.
  • Trim and openings: windows, doors, corners, soffits, fascia, and decorative trim can materially increase labor.
  • Tear-off: removing old siding can reveal hidden sheathing, moisture, or rot that was impossible to price beforehand.
Questions worth asking

Before you accept a siding quote

Why does the calculator estimate siding area?

Most homeowners know their home's living square footage but not its exterior wall area. We use a simple geometric estimate based on home size and stories, subtract an allowance for doors and windows, then add a waste/cut allowance. A contractor should measure the exterior before giving a final quote.

Does the estimate include hidden wall damage?

No. Rot, mold, damaged sheathing, missing flashing, and other problems behind the existing siding are often discovered only after tear-off.

How should I compare contractor quotes?

Compare the exact siding product, tear-off, housewrap or weather barrier, flashing, trim, soffit/fascia scope, sheathing-repair pricing, permits, cleanup, and both workmanship and manufacturer warranties.
